Review 1st Aid Compliance

REGULATION IN GENERAL:

Prior to Regulation 1101 coming into force under the Workers’ Compensation Act as part of the Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990 (proclaimed in force on November 16, 1992, and reflected the law as at December 31, 1990) there were no legislated First Aid Station requirements.

ENSURING COMPLIANCE:

Generally an HR Manager should understand that the company is obligated to provide adequate training, equipment and facilities to/for employees.  The “1-2-3-4” or WSIB Form 82 Poster must be posted reminding everyone of their roles in reporting all accidents and receiving first aid treatment.  Accident / Incident Reports need to be completed immediately upon awareness of injury.  Regular (monthly) Workplace Inspections must include the First Aid Boxes and/or Station.  Workers need to be trained to current St. John Ambulance Standard (or its equivalent), with their names and locations posted together with copies of their certificates readily available.  Manufacturing sites require the an understanding for different first aid supplies in employee populations of 1-5, 6-15 and 16-199 to  200+ when a full first aid room is required (with/without a nurse).  Even those Employers working in Transportation, Construction, Farm and Bush Sites must have a central location or vehicle-affixed First Aid Box dependent upon the situation.

ENHANCED H&S:

Although not dealt with in Reg.1101 there is the belief that Automated External Defibrillation (AED) use may be included in the near future.  These devices, together with current CPR training/practice, have proven to greatly increase a victim’s chance of survival following a sudden cardiac arrest.  AEDs are becoming common place in arenas, swimming pools and other common public areas.  As an authorized Philips distributor St. Johns Ambulance has readily available implementation programs set for company or individual assistance.
